Marijuana Addiction
Marijuana, Cannabis & How THC Affects the Body
Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a psychoactive drug that is used both recreationally and medically and can lead to addiction. The effects of marijuana are derived from the drug THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). Marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs and it can be smoked or ingested in various forms. The human brain contains natural THC receptors which are activated by the drug.
Short-term effects of marijuana include:
- Altered senses
- Altered sense of time
- Changes in mood
- Slow, impaired body movement
- Difficulty with thinking and problem-solving
- Impaired memory
- Increased heart rate
Long-term effects of marijuana can include:
- Temporary hallucinations
- Temporary paranoia
- Worsening symptoms in patients with schizophrenia—a severe mental disorder with symptoms such as hallucinations, paranoia, and disorganized thinking
- Breathing problems, typically from smoking
- Problems with child development during and after pregnancy
- Intense nausea and vomiting
While there are no reported instances of drug overdose from solely marijuana use, an individual can become dependent on the drug and develop a substance use disorder. Substance Use Disorder can be evident when a user cannot stop using a drug even if it is having negative effects on health, finances, relationships, or career.
